Over the last few weeks, Hindus in Aotearoa have been actively trying to engage with Massey University to raise concern and issue regarding a publication promoting Hinduphobia and Hindumisia. The paper titled ‘Cultural Hindutva and Islamophobia’ was authored by Prof. Mohan J. Dutta, Dean’s Chair Professor in Communication, School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing, Massey University.

The trajectory of the recent incidents that have been taking place in quick succession since Rashmi Samant of Oxford University made it to the news, what we see is an escalated attempt to victimise and demonise the Hindus and their identity. Be it Deepawali firecracker ban or the entire Jashn-e-Riwaz episode of FabIndia, the hatred for Hindu symbols, Hindus and everything that is related to Hindu has been both subtle and open.

On December 13, Miss India, 21-year-old Harnaaz Sandhu, was crowned Miss Universe. The 70th Miss Universe 2021 took place at Eliat, Israel. It has been 21 years since Lara Dutta won the title in 2000. Sandhu defeated contestants from Paraguay (first runner-up) and South Africa (second runner-up) to win the title. Former Miss Universe 2020, Andrea Meza from Mexico, presented the crown to Sandhu.

On Thursday (December 9), the US House of Representatives announced that it will vote on a bill to combat Islamophobia in the country. The voting will take place on Tuesday (December 14) on the bill laid down by Representative Ilhan Omar. The said bill seeks to create an office within the State Department to fight Islamophobia.

Nagarwala was arrested in April 2017 after two young girls accused her of performing mutilation procedures on them earlier that year. Dr Jumana Nagarwala, a Muslim doctor in the United States is facing trial on charges of performing female genital mutilation on minor girls, all seven-year-olds. But the federal authorities have now revealed that Ms Nagarwala was not the only doctor cutting the children.

As per reports, on September 11, a 44-year-old Hindu man and his family were performing a small religious ceremony in the Streetsville park in Mississauga city, Canada at around 5:30 PM when two male teens approached them and started abusing them. They also assaulted the man and threw rocks at him.

The man was able to flee from the park with his family in the car. The accused kept throwing rocks at them while they were leaving the park resulting in damaging the car. The victim went to the hospital, where he was treated for the injuries. As per the doctors, his injuries were not life-threatening. The wife and two children escaped physically unharmed.
